But piezoelectric pickups tended to overreact to changes in attack, which in turn caused distortion. To achieve ideal playability, we had to improve the way that these dynamics were controlled. To provide a solution to this issue, the new pickup was designed with a multilayer structure consisting of six layers of different materials. This dampens excessive vibration from the topboard while picking up small resonances to achieve ideal sensitivity and outstanding dynamic balance. Also, because the pickup is fitted directly beneath the topboard, it functions as a transducer attached to the body. - 3-way configuration In addition to two main pickups mounted under the saddle, this system has one each on the bass and treble sides to capture the vibrations of the entire length of the strings and body, as well as the sound's bass and treble components. The pickups are laid out in such a way as to achieve clear reproduction even during high-position soloing.

Borland was intensely involved in every aspect of the design process of his dream signature model from conception to completion. This new model boasts a distinctive design incorporating Yamahas unique Takumi-Kezuri construction in which the back, sides, and center block are all carved from one block of wood (alder, in this case). A two-piece carved maple top finishes the instrument, making it a true semi-hollowbody electric guitar. Other notable design elements include YASH (Yamaha Artist Services Hollywood) designed Custom33 pickups and binding on the inlayed 12-degree angled headstock, F-holes, and beautifully contoured body.

Wes Borland is well known on stage for his elaborate face paint and black-tinted contacts as guitarist for Limp Bizkit. He has also kept himself busy fronting his own band Black Light Burns and as a member of such bands as Big Dumb Face, Eat the Day, and Goatslayer.
Custom 33 Pickup Designed by YASH and Wes
The Custom 33 pickups were developed by YASH (Yamaha Artist Service Hollywood) in collaboration with Wes Borland. 1st through 3rd and 4th through 6th string pole pieces are grouped separately in a design that emphasizes high-end sharpness to produce a clear tone from the hollow body.
